Maaaann...sitting at this computer is making my back tight!
As most of us go about our busy lives, we often find ourselves out of balance. Much of this imbalance can be attributed to improper breathing and bad posture. In an increasingly technological world, we spend hours sitting in chairs, staring at screens. The end result is not merely stress build up and bad posture, but also a lack of creativity and a sense of spiritual powerlessness.
Thankfully, there are time-honored simple methods at our fingertips, we only have to use them. Smai Tawi Yoga is an ancient system of self-care that is designed to re-align and re-tune the practitioner to a state of self-harmony. The following practice relieves stress, opens the spine and improves posture. It utilizes a chair and can be done at home or in the office.
Sit on the edge of your chair. Separate your legs hips distance apart. Make sure your knees are right above your ankles, and your neck is right over your pelvis. Place your hands on your hips. Look straight ahead… Inhale...
Exhale…Release the top of the pelvis backward. Curve your spine over, bringing your body into a hunch. Imagine your belly is empty and hollow. Drop your head and look down.
Inhale…Tilt your pelvis forward. Curve your spine backwards, bringing your body into a back-bend. Broaden and lift your chest and look up…Exhale…
Repeat steps 1-3 as many times as needed, whenever you feel stressed or creatively blocked. Your back will thank you!
